Mary Alice (Steam Yacht, 1897).
Served as USS Mary Alice (SP-397) in 1917-1918

Mary Alice, a 180 gross ton steam yacht, was built in 1897 at Brooklyn, New York. She was purchased by the Navy for World War I service, placed in commission in August 1917 as USS Mary Alice (SP-397), and operated for more than a year on patrol duty in Long Island Sound. On 5 October 1918, while serving as an escort during the trials of the newly-constructed O-13 (Submarine # 74), Mary Alice was rammed by her charge. Though she sank quickly, all of her crew was rescued by O-13.

This page features the only view we have concerning the steam yacht Mary Alice, which served as USS Mary Alice (SP-397) in 1917-1918.
