S.S. Middlesex (American Collier, 1912)
Served as USS Middlesex in 1918-1919.

Middlesex, a 4727 gross ton collier, was built at Camden, New Jersey, in 1912. She was commissioned in the Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, in January 1918 as USS Middlesex (no ID # was assigned) and employed as a cargo ship. Taking on a shipment of general supplies and lumber, she sailed from Norfolk in late January as part of a convoy bound for Bordeaux, France. After operating along the French coast, she returned to New York at the end of April. Middlesex then loaded an Army cargo at Baltimore, Maryland, delivering it at Le Havre, France, in June. During the last part of 1918 she made two more such voyages, taking cargo to Bordeaux and Le Havre. USS Middlesex was decommissioned in January 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owner, the Coastwise Transportation Company of Boston, Massachusetts. S.S. Middlesex was cut down to a barge in 1949 and scrapped at Philadelphia in 1952.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American collier Middlesex, which was USS Middlesex in 1918-1919.
