S.S. Montoso (American Freighter, 1911)
Served as USS Montoso in 1918-1919.
Later S.S. Chee Hsing and S.S. Starside.

Montoso, a 3063 gross ton freighter, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1911. She was commissioned at Baltimore, Maryland, in December 1918 as USS Montoso (no ID # was assigned). In that month the freighter sailed from Baltimore with a cargo of Army supplies, delivering it at Nantes, France, in January 1919. While on her way back to Baltimore she responded to a distress call from USS West Haven (ID # 2159) and towed her to Bermuda. USS Montoso was decommissioned in March 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners, the New York and Puerto Rico Steamship Company. During her long post-World War I era commercial service, Montoso was renamed Chee Hsing in 1946 and Starside in 1950. She was scrapped in 1951.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Montoso, USS Montoso, and S.S. Chee Hsing and Starside.
