Munsomo, a 3315 gross ton (7345 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 1916. The Navy placed her in commission at Baltimore, Maryland, on 28 July 1918 as USS Munsomo (ID # 1607). In August the freighter sailed in a convoy from New York to Verdun, France, moving on to Nantes, France, where she delivered her cargo. In October and November the ship made a similar voyage, also with cargo for Nantes. Returning to Baltimore in December, Munsomo delivered a shipment of general supplies to Antilla, Cuba, in January 1919 and then transported a load of sugar to New York. USS Munsomo was decommissioned on 4 February 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners, the Munson Steamship Company of New York City. S.S. Munsomo became the Italian Capo Orso in 1938 and was sunk by an aircraft torpedo in February 1943.
