Pasadena, a 12570-ton (displacement) freighter, was built at Oakland, California, for the Cunard Steamship Company. However, immediately after she was completed in May 1918 the ship was taken over for World War I service with the U.S. Navy. Commissioned as USS Pasadena (ID # 2943), during May-June 1918 she carried cargo from the West Coast to the New York City by way of the Panama Canal. In early July the cargo ship began the first of four trans-Atlantic round-trip voyages, the first two in support of U.S. combat operations in France and the final two to assist with the post-Armistice withdrawal from Europe. Soon after completing her final trip, USS Pasadena was decommissioned in late April 1919 and transferred to the custody of the United States Shipping Board.
This page features our only view of the freighter Pasadena, which served as USS Pasadena (ID # 2943) in 1918-1919.
