Rivalen, a 43-foot motor pleasure craft, was built at Neponset, Massachusetts, in 1916. Leased by the Navy in April 1917 for use as a patrol boat, she did not actually begin active service until May of the following year. The boat was soon found to be unsuitable for operation and was laid up in July 1918. Rivalen was returned to her owner in May 1919. Her name was changed to Tremont in 1921, and she remained in use as a pleasure craft into the 1930s.
This page features our only view of the motor boat Rivalen, which served as USS Rivalen (SP-63) in 1917-1919.

Note: We have three other 1917 images (including photo #s NH 97347, NH 101058 and NH 101363) of a small craft with the designation "SP-63" painted on it. Some of these had previously been identified as showing Rivalen, but this is clearly incorrect as the craft in question is larger and quite different in appearance. She is probably (or almost certainly) Greenport Hull 278, which became USS Russ (SP-1151).
