Roselle (American Harbor Tug, 1903).
Served as USS Roselle (SP-350) in 1917

Roselle, a 220 ton steam harbor tug, was built in 1903 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for civilian employment. She was taken over by the Navy for World War I service in May 1917 and commissioned as USS Roselle (SP-350) in September of that year. For the next few months she performed minesweeping duties in the New York area. However, at the end of 1917 she was returned to her owner, who needed her for essential national defense work. Later renamed Fearless, the tug was listed in registers of commercial vessels until 1942.

This page features our only views of the harbor tug Roselle, which served as USS Roselle (SP-350) in 1917.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other photograph of the tug Roselle, probably taken prior to her World War I Navy service. She is seen from off her port bow while in harbor, with steam and water exhausting out of ports in her hull side. Her name is visible on her bow and on a nameboard just aft of her pilothouse, and a large owner's badge is mounted on her smokestack.
This print is mounted on the "SP" data card for USS Roselle (SP-350).
