Satellite (American Steam Boat, 1887).
Served as USS Satellite (SP-1912) in 1917-1920

Satellite, a 87-foot steam-powered pleasure craft built at Brooklyn, New York, in 1887, was taken over by the Navy in June 1917. Placed in commission as USS Satellite (SP-1012) in September of that year, she performed training duties at Key West, Florida, until April 1918 when she was taken out of service for repairs. However, problems with her boiler persisted and Satellite remained inactive until March 1920, when she was stricken from the list of Navy vessels. She was subsequently scrapped.

This page features our only views of the steam boat Satellite, which served as USS Satellite (SP-1012) in 1917-1920.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other view of the motor boat Satellite, taken prior to her Naval service.
This photograph was taken from off the vessel's port side, while she was in the same location as in the view presented above.
The original print is cropped so the boat's extreme stern is not seen, and is mounted on the "SP" data card for Satellite (SP-1012).
