Vittorio Emmanuele III (American Freighter, 1918).
Served as USS Vittorio Emmanuele III (ID # 3095) in 1918-1919

Vittorio Emmanuele III, a 4855 gross ton freighter, was built at Seattle, Washington, in 1918. She was taken over for Navy service in June 1918 and placed in commission as USS Vittorio Emmanuele III (ID # 3095). In July the ship went to Arica, Chile, to pick up a load of nitrates, which she carried to Norfolk, Virginia, in August. Between September 1918 and March 1919 she made two round-trip voyages to France with U.S. Army shipments. Decommissioned and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board in April 1919, she was subsequently employed in commercial trade under the names Vittorio Emmanuele III and Vitorlock. Her career apparently ended in 1947, when she disappeared from shipping registers.

This page features our only view of the freighter Vittorio Emmanuele III, which served as USS Vittorio Emmanuele III (ID # 3095) in 1918-1919.
