Virginia, a 61' 6" motor boat, was built in 1906 at City Island, New York. In 1917, while employed as the State of Maine Lobster Warden's boat, she was leased by the Navy for World War I patrol service. Placed in commission as USS Virginia (SP-746), in 1918 her name was changed to SP-746 to avoid confusion with the battleship Virginia. The craft was based at Machias, Maine, until returned to her owner in January 1919.
This page features our only view of the motor boat Virginia, which was USS Virginia (SP-746) and USS SP-746 in 1917-1919.
