Volunteer (American Freighter, 1918).
Served as USS Volunteer (ID # 3242) in 1918-1919

Volunteer, an 7955 gross ton freighter built at Alameda, California, in 1918 was taken over by the Navy in August of that year. Placed in commission as USS Volunteer (ID # 3242), she transported coal from the West Coast to the Philippines, by way of China, between September and November 1918. Returning via Hawaii, the steamer transited to Panama Canal and arrived at New York City in mid-February 1919. She was soon decommissioned and transferred to the U.S. Shipping Board. After nearly two decades in that agency's custody, she was sold to a commercial shipping line in 1937 and operated as SS Volunteer until 1946, then was sold to a foreign owner and renamed Andalusia.

This page features the only views we have concerning the freighter Volunteer, which was USS Volunteer (ID # 3242) in 1918-1919.
