West Loquassuck, a 6087 gross ton (12,225-tons displacement) freighter built in 1918 at Seattle, Washington, was turned over to the Navy upon completion and placed in commission in mid-October 1918 as USS West Loquassuck (ID # 3638). Operated by the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, her maiden voyage took her to Chile to pick up a cargo of nitrates (guano), which she carried through the Panama Canal to Charleston, South Carolina, in December 1918. During the first three months of 1919 the ship made a trip to Falmouth, England, with a load of cotton, and returned to the United States. USS West Loquassuck was decommissioned in mid-April 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. That agency retained her until 1933, when she was abandoned.
