S.S. Walter D. Munson (American Freighter, 1917)
Served as USS Walter D. Munson (ID # 1510) in 1918-1919. Later S.S. Mount Kyllene

Walter D. Munson, a 4388 gross ton (8375 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 1917. She was commissioned in the Navy on 19 April 1918 as USS Walter D. Munson (ID # 1510). Later in that month the ship sailed in a convoy from New York with a cargo of Army supplies, arrived at Brest, France, in May, and moved from there to the Gironde River to deliver her cargo. Between June 1918 and March 1919 Walter D. Munson made five more voyages to France, with the Gironde as the final destination for the first, Le Havre for the next two, and Nantes for the last two. Walter D. Munson was decommissioned at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 14 April 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous delivery to her owners, the Munson Steamship Line of New York City. During her long post-World War I era commercial service, the ship was renamed Mount Kyllene in 1940 and scrapped in 1959.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Walter D. Munson, which was USS Walter D. Munson (ID # 1510) in 1918-1919 and later S.S. Mount Kyllene.
