Westover, a 5700 gross ton (12,205 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Seattle, Washington. Her construction began on British account, under the name War Sun, but she was taken over by the U.S. Emergency Fleet Corporation and renamed prior to completion in April 1918. She then steamed to the East Coast, where in May she was transferred to the Navy and placed in commission as USS Westover (ID # 2867). The new ship began a voyage to France in late May 1918 but engine problems caused her fall out of her convoy. On 11 July 1918, while still en route across the Atlantic eastbound, USS Westover was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-92. Eleven lives were lost with her.
This page features the only view we have concerning the freighter Westover, which served as USS Westover (ID # 2867) in 1918.
