S.S. West View, a 5808 gross ton freighter built by J.F. Duthie and Company at Seattle, Washington, was completed in the autumn of 1918. In November of that year she was turned over to the Navy and placed in commission as USS West View (with no ID # assigned). Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, she steamed from the Pacific to the U.S. Atlantic coast with a cargo of flour on her only voyage while in Navy service. Soon after her arrival at New York City in mid-January 1919, the ship was decommissioned and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. West View was apparently broken up in the later 1930s.
This page features the only view we have concerning the
steamship West View, which served as USS West View
in 1918-1919.
Note that this ship's name is spelled "Westview" on
her official data card.
