Whippet (American Motor Boat, 1917).
Served as USS Whippet (SP-89) in 1917-1919

Whirlwind, a 72-foot motor boat, was built in 1917 at Greenport, Long Island, New York, for use as a pleasure craft. The Navy acquired her in July 1917, placing her in commission later in that month as USS Whippet (SP-89). The boat performed section patrol duties in southern New England waters during the rest of World War I and was returned to her owner in January 1919.

This page features our only view of the motor boat Whippet, which was USS Whippet (SP-89) in 1917-1919.
