Willoughby (Ferry Steamer, 1903).
Originally named Augustus J. Phillips.
Served as USS Willoughby (ID # 2129) in 1918-1919

Willoughby, a 147 gross ton ferry steamer, was built in 1903 at South Rondout, New York. Her original name, Augustus J. Phillips, had been changed by February 1918 when she was chartered by the U.S. Navy and placed in commission as USS Willoughby (ID # 2129). For the rest of World War I, and for nearly a year after the November 1918 Armistice, she operated in the waters of the Fifth Naval District, probably in the vicinity of Norfolk, Virginia. Willoughby was returned to her owner, the Chesapeake Ferry Company of Portsmouth, Virginia, in September 1919.

This page features all the views we have concerning the ferry Willoughby, which was USS Willoughby (ID # 2129) in 1918-1919.
