U.S. NAVY SHIP CAMOUFLAGE -- WORLD WAR II -- Listed by Design Number

Measure 31a, Design 7B

Measure 31a, Design 7B was prepared in October 1944 for application to the battleship Arkansas (BB-33). The only ship known to have been painted in this design, she carried it for a brief time late in that year, then was recoated in the dark single-color Measure 21. Arkansas also wore single-color camouflage during the first several months of World War II. In the later summer of 1942 she was repainted into the two-color Measure 22, which she retained for more than two years.

Like the other Measure 31a battleship schemes, Design 7B was relatively dark, but lighter overall than was typical of Measure 31 designs. Colors used on vertical surfaces included Navy Blue (5-N), Ocean Gray (5-O) and Haze Gray (5-H). Decks and other exterior horizontal surfaces were painted Deck Blue (20-B). For photographs of Arkansas wearing Measure 31a, Design 7B, see Photo #s: 19-N-74310 and 19-N-74310. These show the ship's port side. We hold no photographs showing her starboard side in Design 7B.

Initials appearing on the drawings presented here indicate that their designer/draftsman was Everett Warner ("EW").
