USS Amsterdam, a 10,000-ton Cleveland class light cruiser built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned in January 1945. She made training cruises in Chesapeake Bay and the West Indies during the next few months, and in May 1945 transited the Panama Canal, en route to join the war against Japan. Amsterdam operated during July and the first half of August as a unit of Task Force 38, whose carrier-based planes were engaged in strikes against targets in the Japanese Home Islands. The cruiser remained in the vicinity of Japan until the latter part of September, when she began her homeward-bound voyage across the Pacific. After taking part in Navy Day ceremonies at Portland, Oregon, she made a round-trip cruise to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In January 1946 Amsterdam arrived at San Francisco, California, where she soon began inactivation preparations. Formally decommissioned at the end of June 1947, she spent well over two decades in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. USS Amsterdam was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in January 1971 and sold for scrapping in February 1972.
