USS Astrea (SP-560), 1917-1920

USS Astrea, a 35-foot motor boat, was built in 1916 as a pleasure craft. She was taken over by the Navy and commissioned in June 1917, serving for nearly a year thereafter at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, as the engineer officer's boat. In May 1918 Astrea was transported to Brest, France, on board the transport Leviathan. She was employed in French waters for the rest of World War I, and perhaps into 1919, as a tender to transports and on aviation duties. At the end of March 1920, following her return to the United States, Astrea was sold to a private owner in Baltimore, Maryland.

This page features our only view of USS Astrea (SP-560).
