USS Birgit (AKA-24), 1944-1972

USS Birgit, a 4087-ton Artemis class attack cargo ship built under a Maritime Commission contract at Providence, Rhode Island, was transferred to the Navy and commissioned in late October 1944. From December of that year to the end of Pacific War combat in August 1945 she was employed transporting passengers and cargo in the Mariana and Marshall Islands. Thereafter her operations expanded to include the Philippines and Japan. Birgit arrived at San Francisco, California at the beginning of 1946, then went on to New Orleans, where she was placed out of commission in March. Returned to the Maritime Commission in July 1946, she remained in reserve until sold for scrapping in January 1972.

This page features the only view we have of USS Birgit (AKA-24).
