USS Bandera (APA-131), 1944-1974

USS Bandera, one of 117 Haskell class attack transports, was built to a modified Victory ship design at Vancouver, Washington, and was commissioned in December 1944. Between February and August 1945 she carried troops and cargo between Pearl Harbor, Ulithi, Guam, Saipan, and Eniwetok. After the Japanese surrender in August, she carried personnel and equipment between the Philippines and Inchon, Korea. She returned to San Francisco in December 1945 and then carried passengers between that port and Shanghai, China.

Bandera proceeded to the East Coast in February 1946 and was placed out of commission in reserve there in May. In the same month she was transferred to the Maritime Commission for retention in its reserve fleet and was stricken from the Navy List. The Maritime Administration sold her for scrapping in January 1974.

This page features our only view of USS Bandera (APA-131).
