USS Beckham (APA-133), 1944-1974

USS Beckham, one of 117 Haskell class attack transports, was built to a modified Victory ship design at Vancouver, Washington, and was commissioned in December 1944. After shakedown training off the West Coast, she arrived at Eniwetok in February 1945. She arrived off Iwo Jima in mid-March, just as enemy organized resistance was ending. She then returned Marine Corps troops from Iwo Jima, Guam, and Eniwetok to Pearl Harbor. At Pearl Harbor, Beckham embarked Army troops, which she delivered to Okinawa in late June. She then transported casualties to Saipan and carried Army and Army Air Force personnel back to Pearl Harbor. She was carrying out a logistics voyage from Pearl Harbor to the Central Pacific islands when the Japanese surrendered in August 1945.

In September Beckham landed troops and cargo at Inchon, Korea. After voyages to Okinawa, the Philippines, and China, she returned to San Francisco in late November. In December and January she made a voyage from the West Coast to the Philippines and brought a full load of returning troops to Seattle. Beckham sailed from San Francisco for the East Coast in mid-February and was placed out of commission in reserve there in April. She was transferred to the Maritime Commission in April for retention in its reserve fleet and was stricken from the Navy List in May. The Maritime Administration sold the ship for scrapping in July 1974.
