USS Bremerton, a 13,600-ton Baltimore class heavy cruiser built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in April 1945. She operated in the Atlantic for most of that year then steamed to the Pacific, where she was to spend the rest of her days. The cruiser deployed to the Far East in late 1945, remaining there until November 1946. Following training operations in the eastern Pacific, Bremerton decommissioned at San Francisco, California, in April 1948.
Brought back into active service during the Korean War, Bremerton recommissioned in November 1951. She made two combat cruises to the war zone in 1952 and 1953, providing heavy gunfire support for the United Nations forces fighting in Korea. After the Korean armistice, Bremerton carried out a regular pattern of Seventh Fleet deployments that lasted through the end of the decade. She was modified in about 1957 to carry Regulus surface-to-surface guided missiles. Decommissioned for the last time in July 1960, USS Bremerton remained in the Reserve Fleet until October 1973, when she was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register. She was sold for scrapping in July 1974.
