USS Bavaria, a 3898 gross ton cargo ship, was built at Hamburg, Germany, in 1905 as a German flag commercial freighter. She was seized by the Government of Cuba in 1917 and turned over to the United States Shipping Board. Allocated to the Navy, she was placed in commission early in January 1918. The ship made a round-trip voyage to France in March-April and another along the U.S. Atlantic coast in May 1918. The following month, Bavaria was decommissioned and returned to the Shipping Board. She subsequently had a career as a Cuban merchant ship.
