USS Carteret (APA-70), 1944-1948

USS Carteret, a 4247-ton Gilliam class attack transport built at Wilmington, California, was commissioned in early December 1944. She left the West Coast in January 1945 to carry troops to Pearl Harbor and in February took part in the amphibious assault on Iwo Jima. Carteret's next operation was the Okinawa campaign, in which she participated during April 1945. From May through the end of hostilities in August, the ship transported passengers between the western and central Pacific and the U.S. Following Japan's surrender Carteret supported the occupation of Jinsen (Inchon), Korea. From late October 1945 into March 1946 she carried Pacific war veterans home. Assigned to target duty during the July 1946 Atomic bomb tests at Bikini, Marshall Islands, the ship was left in a radioactive condition. She was placed out of commission early in August and later towed to Kwajalein. USS Carteret was sunk as a target on 19 April 1948 by the heavy cruiser Toledo.
