USS Castle Rock (AVP-35), 1944-1948

USS Castle Rock, a 1,766-ton Barnegat class small seaplane tender, was built at Houghton, Washington, and was commissioned in October 1944. She left San Diego for the Central Pacific in December 1944 and, upon arrival at Eniwetok in January, began escorting convoys between Saipan, Guam, and Ulithi. In March she became tender for seaplanes at Saipan, while also serving as a local escort.

Between November 1945 and January 1946 Castle Rock transported a group from Guam to Chichi Jima and Truk to study Japanese defenses at these locations. She departed Saipan for the last time in March 1946 and proceeded to San Francisco for inactivation. Castle Rock was decommissioned in August 1946.

In September 1948 Castle Rock was loaned to the Coast Guard as the cutter Castle Rock (WAVP-383, later WHEC-383). She served out of Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine, primarily on weather station duty, for most of her Coast Guard career. She was transferred to South Vietnam as Tran Vinh Trong in December 1971. She became the Philippine Francisco Dagahoy in April 1976 and was decommissioned in June 1985.
