USS Cabana (DE-260), 1943-1947

USS Cabana, a 1140-ton Evarts class escort ship built at the Boston Navy Yard, Massachusetts, was commissioned in July 1943. Following shakedown, she went to the Pacific in October. In the last part of 1943 and the first two months of 1944, Cabana escorted tankers and transports during the operations to capture the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. She was part of an anti-submarine hunter-killer group in March and April 1944 and participated in the conquest of the Marianas during June, July and August.

After escorting invasion forces to the Palaus in September 1944, Cabana provided convoy escort services in the Central Pacific for the next two months. In February and March 1945, she was involved in the Iwo Jima operation. Returning the the war zone in July 1945 after a stateside overhaul, Cabana escorted logistics forces during the last weeks of the Pacific War and the initial stages of the occupation of Japan. She briefly served as a weather station ship off Pearl Harbor before returning to the United States in November 1945. USS Cabana was decommissioned in January 1946 and sold in May 1947.
