USS Commodore, a 62' 4" patrol craft, was built in 1917 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, as the civilian-owned motor boat Herreshoff # 318. She was acquired by the Navy in October 1917 and placed in commission in mid-November of that year. Commodore spent much of her service in Florida waters, and was decommissioned at Pensacola Naval Air Station in May 1919. She was transferred to the U.S. Army in October 1919.
