USS Chanticleer (SP-663), 1917-1918.
Previously the civilian motor boat Chanticleer.
Chanticleer, a 37' 5" motor pleasure boat, was
built prior to World War I by Wilton C. Crosby. She was acquired
by the Navy in May 1917 and placed in commission as USS Chanticleer
(SP-663). The craft was employed in southern New England waters
until after the November 1918 Armistice and, late in that month,
was returned to her owner, H.S. Hutchinson of New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Chanticleer (American Motor Boat)
Anchored off a recreational bathing beach, prior to World War
I.
This boat, built by Wilton C. Crosby and owned by H.S. Hutchinson
of New Bedford, Massachusetts, was acquired by the Navy on 21
May 1917 and placed in commission the next day as USS Chanticleer
(SP-663). She was returned to her owner on 25 November 1918.

USS Chanticleer (SP-663)
Underway during World War I patrol service.
The civilian motor boat Chanticleer was acquired by the
Navy on 21 May 1917 and placed in commission one day later. She
was returned to her owner, H.S. Hutchinson of New Bedford, Massachusetts,
on 25 November 1918.
