Dunderberg (launched 1865)
Became French Navy ship Rochambeau in 1867.

Dunderberg, a 7060-ton casemate ironclad ram, was built at New York City beginning in 1862. Launched in July 1865, she was not formally taken over by the Navy, which had little need for her after the end of the Civil War. She was legally returned to her builder in 1867 and was soon sold to France. Renamed Rochambeau by the French Navy, the ship had relatively brief service and was broken up in 1874.

This page features all the views we have related to the ironclad ram Dunderberg.

The Naval Historical Center's collections include no pictures of Dunderberg after she was sold abroad. However, we know of two views of her as the French Navy's Rochambeau:

(1):
Lithograph, showing Rochambeau underway from off the port side, somewhat toward the bow.
This print, published in France, is owned by the Mariners Museum, Newport News, Virginia, and bears their Photograph number LP-1401.

(2): Photograph, taken from above and off the ship's port bow, while she was drydocked in a French dockyard.
This photograph has been printed in "Warships of the Civil War Navies", by Paul H. Silverstone (Naval Institute Press, 1989), page 17. It is credited to the well-known photographic firm of Marius Bar, of Toulon, France.
