USS Dianthus (SP-639), 1917-1918

USS Dianthus, a 65 foot section patrol craft, was built in 1913 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, as a civilian motor pleasure boat. She was leased by the Navy for World War I service in mid-May 1917 and placed in commission later in that month. For the remainder of the conflict, Dianthus operated in the waters of the 4th Naval District. She was decommissioned in late November 1918, about two weeks after the Armistice, and returned to her owner, John P. Crozer of Upland, Pennsylvania.

This page features the only views we have concerning USS Dianthus (SP-639).
