USS Dean II (SP-98), 1917-1918.
Originally the civilian motor boat Dean II (1915)

USS Dean II, a 42-foot section patrol boat, was built in 1915 at Greenport, New York, as the motor pleasure boat of the same name. She was acquired by the Navy and placed in commission in May 1917. For the next year, Dean II was employed in the waters of the Third Naval District. However, despite an initial evaluation as a "well built and seaworthy boat for her size", she apparently proved unsuitable for Naval purposes and, in March 1918, was ordered to be returned to her owner. This action was carried out in mid-July of that year.

This page features the only views we have concerning USS Dean II (SP-98) and the civilian motor boat Dean II.
