USS Edward Luckenbach (ID # 1662), 1918-1919
Originally, and later, S.S. Edward Luckenbach (American Freighter, 1916-1942)

S.S. Edward Luckenbach, an 8151 gross ton (15,963 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1916 for commercial operation by the Luckenbach Steamship Company of New York City. She was transferred to the Navy in late August 1918 and placed in commission at that time as USS Edward Luckenbach (ID # 1662). In mid-September, as a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, the ship began a voyage to France with Army cargo. Upon her return to the U.S. in November 1918, soon after the Armistice brought World War I's fighting to an end, Edward Luckenbach was converted to a troop transport. Reassigned to the Cruiser and Transport Force, during the first eight months of 1919 she made three voyages to bring home veterans of the great conflict. A fourth trip for this purpose was aborted by problems with her machinery. USS Edward Luckenbach was decommissioned in early August 1919 and returned to her owner. Following more than two decades of further merchant marine service, on 1 July 1942 she sank after accidently entering a defensive minefield off Florida and striking two mines.
