USS Edward L. Doheny III (ID # 3835), 1918-1919.
Originally and later the civilian tanker E. L. Doheny, Third; later S.S. F. H. Wickett and E. G. Seubert.

S.S. E. L. Doheny, Third (sometimes rendered as E. L. Doheny III), a 8118 gross ton (18,220 tons displacement) tanker named for a grandson of the oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, was completed at Camden, New Jersey, in November 1918. She was commissioned in the Navy in November 1918 as USS Edward L. Doheny III (ID # 3835). Her first Navy voyage took her to Tampico, Mexico, to load oil which she delivered to Newport, Rhode Island, in December 1918. The tanker then reloaded at Port Arthur, Texas, and delivered fuel to the Azores in January 1919. From there she was directed to Italian ports to replenish Italian fuel stocks used by six U.S. destroyers operating in the Mediterranean. Back at New York in March, Edward L. Doheny III repeated her voyage to Gibraltar and Italian ports in April and May. Between May and July she carried fuel to Gibraltar, Brest, and Devonport. In July the ship delivered a load of fuel to Melville, Rhode Island; in August she delivered oil to the Panama Canal Zone and Guantanamo Bay; and in September she carried fuel oil from New Orleans to the Clyde. USS Edward L. Doheny III was decommissioned in November 1919 and transferred to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owners. During subsequent commercial service the tanker was renamed F. H. Wickett in 1920 and E. G. Seubert in 1930. S.S. E. G. Seubert was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-510 in the Gulf of Aden on 23 February 1944. Six men were lost with her, including three members of the ship's U.S. Navy Armed Guard.

This page features the only views we have concerning S.S. E. L. Doheny, Third; USS Edward L. Doheny III; S.S. F. H. Wickett; and S.S. E. G. Seubert.
