USS Emerald (SP-177), 1917-1918

The patrol ship USS Emerald was built in 1916 by Pusey & Jones of Wilmington, Delaware, as a 198 gross ton steam yacht. She was taken over by the Navy in July 1917 and placed in commission at that time. For the rest of World War I, Emerald served in the Delaware Bay area, conducting harbor entrance patrols. She was returned to her owner, Maxwell Wyeth of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in December 1918.
