USS Goodrich (DD-831, later DDR-831 and DD-831), 1945-1977

USS Goodrich, a 2425-ton Gearing class destroyer built at Bath, Maine, was commissioned in April 1945. Soon converted to a radar picket destroyer, she served in the Far East for a year beginning in late 1945. Rejoining the Atlantic Fleet early in 1947, a year later Goodrich began the first of many tours of duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. In March 1949 she was formally redesignated DDR-831, in recognition of her earlier conversion. Among her services while with the Sixth Fleet was patrol in the Red Sea and operations in the Eastern Mediterranean during the 1956 crisis and war over the Suez Canal. In 1958 the destroyer supported U.S. Marine landings in Lebanon.

Modernized in 1960 under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program, Goodrich was one of a small number of destroyers retained in radar picket ship configuration. In 1962 she assisted in recovery operations during the first Project Mercury orbital space mission and, later in the year, participated in Cuban Missile Crisis operations. Her 14th Mediterranean deployment, in 1967, also included a visit to the Black Sea. Redesignated DD-831 at the beginning of 1969, USS Goodrich remained part of the fleet until stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in February 1974. She was sold in September 1977.

USS Goodrich was named in honor of Rear Admiral Caspar F. Goodrich (1857-1925), and of his son, Lieutenant Caspar F. Goodrich (1881-1907), who was killed on 15 July 1907 in a gun turret explosion on board USS Georgia.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Goodrich (DD-831, later DDR-831 and DD-831).

In addition to the images presented above, the National Archives appears to hold other views of USS Goodrich (DD-831, later DDR-831 and DD-831). The following list features some of these images:

The images listed below are NOT in the Naval Historical Center's collections.
DO NOT try to obtain them using the procedures described in our page "How to Obtain Photographic Reproductions".

The following three photographs show USS Goodrich in her "as completed" configuration, as a normal Gearing class destroyer:

  • Photo #: 80-G-313891
USS Goodrich (DD-831) underway at high speed on 24 April 1945, during her trial run from Bath, Maine, to Boston, Massachusetts. Taken from an aircraft based at Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine.
High aerial view, taken from directly ahead.

  • Photo #: 80-G-313893
As 80-G-313891, but port broadside aerial view.

  • Photo #: 80-G-313894
As 80-G-313891, but port quarter aerial view.

The following three photographs show USS Goodrich in her initial radar picket destroyer configuration, with a light tripod radar mast located immediately forward of her after smokestack:

  • Photo #: 80-G-396620
USS Goodrich (DD-831) underway at sea, 25 July 1948. Photographed by AF1 R.B. Jones, of USS Coral Sea (CVB-43).
High aerial view, taken from nearly directly ahead and slightly to starboard.

  • Photo #: 80-G-396621
As 80-G-396620, but starboard broadside aerial view.

  • Photo #: 80-G-411609
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway, 29 September 1949, en route to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Starboard broadside (rather tight on the bow) aerial view.

The following photograph shows USS Goodrich in her second radar picket destroyer configuration, with the light tripod radar mast removed from forward of her after smokestack and a small round radar antenna mounted just aft of that smokestack. A tripod foremast, mounting new radar antennas, has also been fitted and her 40mm guns have been replaced with 3"/50s:

  • Photo #: 80-G-634215
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway off the Florida Coast, 2 February 1954. Photographed by USS Lake Champlain (CVA-39).
Starboard bow low aerial view. This appears to be a handsome photograph, with the ship running at high speed and nicely lighted by sunlight.

The following photograph shows USS Goodrich in her third radar picket destroyer configuration, with a large SPS-8 height-finding radar antenna mounted on her after deckhouse:

  • Photo #: USN 1042465
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway off the Florida coast, with a helicopter from USS Saratoga (CVA-60) delivering a mail bag to her, May 1959. Photographed by Ike, of USS Saratoga.
Port bow surface view, taken from about the height of the ship's foremast radar antenna platform. The helicopter (probably a HUP type) is hovering over Goodrich's stern and an oiler is in the distance.

The following six photographs show USS Goodrich in her fourth radar picket destroyer configuration. A tripod mast with TACAN antenna dome at its top is located forward of her after smokestack, most of her 3"/50 guns have been removed, and a new air search radar antenna is carried on her foremast. The SPS-8 antenna is still mounted atop her after deckhouse:

  • Photo #: USN 1051938
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway on 14 November 1960. Photographed by PH1 C.D. Ardis.
    Port broadside low aerial view.

  • Photo #: USN 1051939
As USN 1051938, but port broadside high aerial view (from almost directly above the ship).

  • Photo #: USN 1051940
As USN 1051938, but port bow low aerial view. Land is visible in the distance.

  • Photo #: USN 1051941
As USN 1051938, but starboard broadside very low aerial view.

  • Photo #: USN 1051942
As USN 1051938, but port quarter very low aerial view.

  • Photo #: USN 1054643
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway on 18 March 1961, while operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. Photographed by PH1 Dolwick of USS Forrestal (CVA-59).
Starboard broadside (somewhat toward the stern) aerial view. This photograph shows the ship relatively distantly: she only fills about a third of the image width.

The following three photographs show USS Goodrich in her final radar picket destroyer configuration, with a large round SPS-30 radar antenna atop her after deckhouse:

  • Photo #: USN 1103746
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway on 12 June 1964. Photographed by AN W.R. Solt of USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42).
Port bow (relatively tight on the bow) surface view.

  • Photo #: USN 1114376
USS Goodrich (DDR-831) underway on 8 October 1965. Photographed by PH1 R. Campbell of USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Port bow (relatively toward the broadside) aerial view.

  • Photo #: Navy KN-13476 (color)
