USS Hopkins was one of hundreds of similar destroyers
built in response to the First World War's German submarine crisis.
Laid down at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation's shipyard
at Camden, New Jersey, on 30 July 1919, nearly nine months after
the fighting ended, she was launched almost eleven months later,
on 26 June 1920. Her sponsor, Miss Sarah A. Babbitt, was a descendent
of the ship's namesake, the Revolutionary War naval leader Commodore Esek Hopkins.
After fitting out at Camden, Hopkins was placed in commission
on 21 March 1921.
