Ship's new Commanding Officer, Captain Henry Kent Hewitt, USN, inspects her Marine Detachment, as he assumes command, 16 March 1936.
Also in the reviewing party are the ship's Executive Officer, Commander Theodore S. Wilkinson (left) and First Lieutenant John D. Blanchard, USMC.
Marines are "Presenting Arms" with M1903 rifles.

Ship's complement and flag contingent posed on the forecastle and forward 8" turrets and superstructure, while anchored at Berth Number One, Long Beach, California, in the last half of 1937.
Seated in the front row, center, is Vice Admiral William T. Tarrant, Commander, Scouting Force, U.S. Fleet.
To his left, also in front row, is Captain Thomas C. Kinkaid, Commanding Officer of USS Indianapolis.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35)


African-American Mess Attendants in battle dress, July 1942. These men had volunteered for additional duty as gunners.
The ship's Commanding Officer, Captain E.W. Hanson, is the second officer from the right. Standing beside him is Steward William Henry.
A few of these men are wearing old World War I style helmets, while most have the then-new M-1 type helmets.

Identity of ship and men was provided by Mr. William Henry in October 1996.

Members of the ship's crew pose in the well deck, during World War II.
Photograph was taken prior to her final overhaul (completed in July 1945), as life rafts are of a different pattern than carried after that overhaul.
Photograph was received by the Naval Photographic Science Laboratory on 24 August 1945.
