    USS James O'Hara (APA-90)


    Crewmen and embarked troops receive lessons in Arabic while in the Atlantic en route from Norfolk to Oran, Algeria, to take part in the invasion of Sicily. Photographed on 15 June 1943.
    Note the segmented shading of the number on the landing craft in the background, The number, PA90-1, indicates it is boat number one assigned to APA-90.

    Troops en route to Oran, Algeria, 15 June 1943


    Troops headed for the invasion of Sicily studying guidebooks for North Africa and otherwise passing the time in their bunks on board a U. S. Navy transport. The ship may be USS James O'Hara (APA-90).
    Note that these men are armed with bolt-action Springfield rifles. They are from the 45th Infantry Division.

    Sicily Invasion, July 1943


    Task Force 85 ("Cent" Force) en route to the landings at Scoglitti, Sicily, on 8 July 1943. Photographed from its flagship, USS Ancon (AGC-4).
    USS Leonard Wood (APA-12) is at left. The next transport astern of her is USS James O'Hara (APA-90). The destroyer in the center is not identified; USS Parker (DD-604), Kendrick (DD-612), Laub (DD-613), Mackenzie (DD-614), Cowie (DD-632), Doran (DD-634), and Earle (DD-635) were assigned to this force.
