USS Karin, a 7435-ton (limiting displacement) Adria class store ship, was built at Beaumont, Texas, as a Maritime Commission R1-M-AV3 type refrigerator ship. She was turned over to the Navy upon completion in January 1945 and was commissioned early in the next month. During the rest of World War II, Karin carried provisions to the western Pacific combat zone, making three voyages for this purpose. She made many more trips to the Far East and elsewhere in the Pacific from September 1945 until the later 1950s, supporting U.S. forces' peacetime activities, as well as Korean War combat operations. Her base was shifted from the West Coast to Hawaii in 1954, shortly before she helped evacuate refugees from northern Vietnam to the southern part of that country. USS Karin was placed out of commission in December 1958. She was transferred to Maritime Administration custody in June 1960 and remained laid up at Olympia, Washington, until sold for for non-transportation use in 1967. The ship was subsequently converted to a deepwater oil drilling rig.
