USS Kentuckian (ID # 1544), 1919-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Kentuckian (1910)

USS Kentuckian, a 6582 gross ton freighter, was built in 1910 at Sparrows Point, Maryland, for commercial employment. Owned by the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, for much of World War I she was chartered to the U.S. Army and operated with a Navy armed guard manning her guns. The Navy acquired the ship in December 1918 and refitted her as a transport. Between March and August 1919, Kentuckian made five trips to France, taking cargo over and bringing U.S. troops home. Decommissioned in September 1919 and returned to her owners, she continued in merchant service until June 1944, when the old ship was scuttled as a blockship off the Normandy invasion beachhead.

This page features all the views we have concerning SS Kentuckian and USS Kentuckian (ID # 1544).
