USS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria (ID # 3963), 1919-1919

USS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, a 24,581 gross ton transport, was built at Stettin, Germany, in 1905 as the civilian passenger liner of the same name. She operated under the German flag in the trans-Atlantic trade from the spring of 1906 until World War I broke out in early August 1914. During the conflict the ship was laid up at Hamburg and, after the fighting ended, she was allocated to Great Britain and then chartered for use by the U.S. Navy. Commissioned in February 1919, Kaiserin Auguste Victoria made five voyages from France to the United States, bringing home American service personnel. This work ended in August 1919, with the big ship being placed out of commission in December of that year and returned to the British. Following brief service with the Cunard Line, she was sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, who renamed her Empress of Scotland and employed her for the rest of the decade. Her final commercial voyage took place in the fall of 1930. Sold that December, she burned and sank while awaiting scrapping. The ship's remains were broken up during 1931.

Note: As with a few other contemporary ships, Kaiserin Auguste Victoria had two "ID" numbers assigned to her, perhaps as a result of clerical errors in what was a very busy World War I era Navy Department. She was apparently initially given ID # 1472 (a number in a series being actively assigned in 1917 or early in 1918, which seems rather odd considering that Kaiserin Auguste Victoria was laid up in Germany at that time and would hardly have been available for possible U.S. Navy service). By the time her official data card was prepared (sometime in late 1918 or early 1919), her ID number was 3963.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria (ID # 3963).
