USS Kangaroo (SP-1284), 1917-1919.
Originally civilian motor boat Herreshoff Hull # 316 and Kangaroo (1917)

USS Kangaroo, 62'4" section patrol boat, was constructed in 1917 at Bristol, Rhode Island, as Herreshoff Hull # 316, one of a group of identical craft built in anticipation of possible World War I patrol service. Her civilian owner had named her Kangaroo by the time the Navy purchased her in September 1917. The craft served in northern New England waters until October 1918, when she was sent south. Kangaroo operated out of Key West, Florida, from January 1919 until decommissioned in May. She was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard in November 1919 and thereafter served at Key West, Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk, Virginia. Renamed AB-6 in November 1923, she was sold in October 1932.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Kangaroo (SP-1284) and the civilian motor boat Kangaroo.

At anchor prior to her World War I Navy service.
One of nine 62'4" boats built by Herreshoff, of Bristol, Rhode Island, specifically for Naval service, and known initially as Herreshoff Hull 316, this craft was taken over by the Navy and placed in commission on 18 September 1917 as USS Kangaroo (SP-1284). She was transferred to the Treasury Department on 22 November 1919.
This photograph, in which the name "Kangaroo" is faintly visible on the boat's pilothouse, was also used on the contemporary "SP" record cards of two sisters: Daiquiri (SP-1285) and War Bug (SP-1795).
