USS K-4, a 392-ton K-1 class submarine built at Seattle, Washington, was originally assigned the name Walrus. However, this was changed in November 1911, nearly three years before she was commissioned in October 1914. As part of the Pacific Fleet, K-4 served along the U.S. West Coast and in Hawaiian waters until late 1917, when she was sent through the Panama Canal to begin operations out of Key West, Florida. Following the end of World War I the submarine remained in the Atlantic, mainly performing training duties. USS K-4 was decommissioned in May 1923 and, following eight years in reserve, was sold as scrap in June 1931.
