-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --

USS Lakeport (ID # 2994), 1917-1919.
Name sometimes given as Lake Port.
Originally S.S. War Penguin (American Freighter, 1917. Later renamed Lakeport, Danubier, Houthandel, Koshin Maru, and Kosin Maru.

War Penguin, a 2028 gross ton (4400 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Cleveland, Ohio, in October 1917. Soon renamed Lakeport (sometimes rendered Lake Port), she was commissioned in the Navy in January 1918 as USS Lakeport (ID # 2994). Between January and March the ship carried several cargoes of coal from Norfolk, Virginia, to Halifax and Bermuda. Lakeport then commenced service as a mine carrier, transporting these explosive devices and other cargo from Norfolk to ports in Scotland in May, August, October, and December 1918. During March-July 1919 the freighter took coal from Norfolk to the Azores, Bermuda, and several points along the U.S. east coast. USS Lakeport was decommissioned in July 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. She became the Belgian Danubier in 1920, the Belgian Houthandel in 1926, and the Japanese Koshin Maru in 1927 (re-rendered as Kosin Maru in 1938). The old ship survived World War II only to be wrecked at Kawasaki, Japan, in December 1945.

This page features the only views we have concerning S.S. Lakeport, USS Lakeport, S.S. Danubier, S.S. Houthandel, S.S. Koshin Maru, and S.S. Kosin Maru.
