USS LST-563, 1944-1945.

USS LST-563, a 3776-ton (full load displacement) LST-511 class tank landing ship built at Evansville, Indiana, was commissioned in May 1944. On 21 December of that year, while attempting to land materials for a weather station, she broached on Clipperton Island, in the eastern Pacific, and was stranded. Unsuccessful efforts to pull her off resulted in serious damage to USS Seize (ARS-26) and lesser injuries to USS Viking (ARS-1) and USS Tenino (ATF-115). LST-563's cargo was transferred ashore by early January, and the condition of her hull gradually deteriorated until salvage was deemed impractical. After she had been stripped of instruments, equipment and other material, in February 1945 USS LST-563 was stricken from list of Naval vessels and abandoned.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS LST-563.
