USS L-2 (Submarine # 41, later SS-41), 1916-1933

USS L-2, a 450-ton L-1 class submarine built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in late September 1916. After service along the U.S. Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico area, in November 1917 she began a long voyage to European waters, by way of the Azores. From February until the end of World War I, L-2 conducted anti-submarine patrols out of Bantry Bay, Ireland. During these operations, she had at least two encounters with German U-Boats. One of these, on 10 July 1918, resulted in the loss of UB-65, though this sinking may have resulted from a weapons malfunction on the German sub. Following her return to the U.S. in February 1919, L-2 was employed on experimental duties. Inactive after May 1922, she was decommisioned a year later and laid up. She was stricken from the Navy list in December 1930 and scrapped in 1933.
