    Scoter
    (American Motor Boat, 1916)

    Passing USS L-1 (Submarine # 40) while underway, probably in 1916.
    USS L-3 (Submarine # 42) and USS Monaghan (Destroyer # 32) are in the background.
    This pleasure craft, built by George Lawley & Son of Neponset, Massachusetts, became USS Scoter (SP-20) in 1917.

    "L" type submarines


    Alongside their tender, in British waters during World War I.
    Tender is probably USS Bushnell. Location is probably Berehaven, Ireland.
    Submarines are (from left to right):
    USS L-3 (Submarine # 42);
    USS L-11 (Submarine # 51);
    USS L-10 (Submarine # 50);
    USS L-4 (Submarine # 43); and
    USS L-9 (Submarine # 49).
    Note differing forms of "chariot" bridges on these submarines; white markings on their foredecks; and 3"/23 deck guns in retracted position, just forward of the submarines' fairwaters.

    USS Kanawha

    Note Kanawha's rudder and port side propeller, and propellers on L-3, whose rudder and after diving planes have been removed.
