USS Meade was the third of five Benson class destroyers constructed between late 1940 and mid-1942 at the Bethlehem Steel Company's Staten Island, New York, shipyard. Her keel was laid on 25 March 1941 and she was launched on 15 February 1942, sponsored by Mrs. Moray Nairne Woottan. The ship was placed in commission at the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York, on 22 June 1942.
